Cover fire and the ability to overwhelm enemies with distinct obstacles such as fences and windows were tightly integrated into the squad-based aspects of the single-player campaign. The first Call of Duty made significant strides towards differentiating from other FPS games at the time, particularly with the A.I. The player will temporarily experience false tinnitus (indicated by a ringing sound that persists until the Shellshock effect passes), sound muffling effects that mimic the temporary deafness from the loud explosion, blurry vision, and the player will be slowed and unable to sprint. The game introduced a new version of AI-controlled allies that assist the player during missions and react to changing situations during the game. The game is set during World War 2, but it introduced storylines and gameplay that did not focus solely on the Americans, but also the British and Russian perspectives. The game takes cues from the Medal of Honor series of games, as well as Quake III: Team Arena.
